Molland

Molland is an unspoilt, farming village on the southern edge of Exmoor, with an Inn, a shop and a church.  The church is a 15th century replacement of an earlier building and is unusual because it has 'escaped' restoration by the Victorians.  The furnishings are mainly Georgian and the pews are high sided 'horse box' affairs.  In 1804 the infamous hunting Parson Froude became vicar of Molland and Knowstone.  He had a reputation as a tyrant and is said to have retained a private army of tenant farmers, grooms etc. for terrorising his enemies.

Molland is famous for the North Devon Red Cattle bred by the Quartly family.  Their deep blood-red colour giving the cattle the name “Red Rubies” and “Rubies of the West”.

The London Inn is next to the church.  A 15th century former coaching Inn, this fine, small country hostelry retains its rustic charm; open log fires, inglenooks and beamed ceilings.  Good ale straight from the barrel, fresh-cooked food and B&B accommodation are available.  There is a legend that during the days of John Knight, a gang of his miners who, happily drinking a weeks wages away, were driven out of the London Inn by their angry wives who had marched from Simonsbath!
